This is an Original Noel Rockmore from 1966 Titled: Early Table Series with Cat (Titled by Collector, Untitled by Artist) It is a 13.5 X 11 Watercolor on paper and NOT framed but nicely matted within a 14 x 11 Matte. It is from the Shirley Marvin Collection and it is from her SketchBook #5 - Titled: 1 966 New Orleans Bars It is the 1st page of the Sketchbook and is signed and dated Mar 66 NY by Rockmore. The catalog Number within the Shirley Marvin Collection given to this work is 66.3.196 This work was purchased directly from The Artist, Noel Rockmore, by Shirley Marvin and comes with a letter of authenticity. There is a story about this Noel Rockmore artwork. Noel Rockmore's was certainly doing his art at the height of the "psychedelic 60s" which is the time period and style of this work. After the death of his parents in 1966 and 1967, Rockmore went through a time when he depicts himself communicating with nature in all sorts of moods. There is something in these works where he not only captures his own feelings but the feeling of the late 60s. We know that the figure in the center is the artist because of the hat he is wearing. The flowers in the middle have always symbolized Rockmore's gift as an artist to the world. The Sun and planets were elements of many Rockmore works from this time period. They appear in his works in many different shapes and forms. Rockmore also seems to have liked drawing men in conversation around a table often with a cat which is known as his Table series. The Cityscape in the background that is done in pen with lots of windows and patterns is another reoccurring theme in Rockmore works. The SPECIAL UNIQUE Technique that he uses in this work is the act of working the paper before he draws on it. It leaves textures and handprints in various patterns and then Rockmore creates using the patterns on the work. This work is included at the very beginning of the New Orleans Bars pen on paper sketches and has no relation to that book since it is from New York and a watercolor. It was about this time that Rockmore realized Shirley Marvin would be a long term patron and that works that he felt would have a HISTORIC significance, like this first attempt at a Table Series, would be safe and preserved for the future in Shirley's Sketchbooks. He was recognized and had shows at The Whitney, MOMA, the Met & the Hirschorn as Noel Davis before he was 28. His parents, Floyd Davis & Gladys Rockmore Davis , were two of the most recognized artist in America from the 1930s through the 1940s. The Noel Rockmore Project (website - / ) has been working to bring this master artist to light for the past three years after 1400 works of Noel Rockmore were discovered in Shirley Marvin's storage in New Orleans after Katrina. There is a nice 10 page Rockmore article that has just come out in a major publication by John Ed Bradley called The Tomb of Noel Rockmore /article/tomb-rockmore and Rockmore will be included in a Show in Marfa Texas this spring. Rockmore will also have another show in Lagrange, GA that opens with a three day bash on October 28-30, 2011. A book, screenplay, documentary and movie are all in the near future.
