Joan Greenwood (1921-1987) and André Morell (1909- 1978) ALS 2pp. 8mo. with cover. 251A King's Rd. Chelsea, "Saturday". (postmarked Chelsea, 26 July 1960). Letter from both, each in their own hand, to Miss Ludi Claire, an actress in New York City, describing Joan's travails on location for the movie The Mysterious Island (adapted *very* loosely on the Jules Verne novel). Saturday O Ludi dear Ludi Ludi dear you dear. O dear. How did you know that we were both hotty about Picasso? Just because you are Ludi I suppose. Or because you are Claire(man!?) of the P. Bull Soc. Manhattan Branch. Joanie was in Spain on location - TERRIBLE film producer (American Gent Leight Charles Schneer - you ken?) and was MIS. But now thank Venus she's home and dry. So I waited until she was home and dry before writing to say what a dear sweet friend you are. We have to start "Hedda" rehearsals about the end of August (opening at the (???) with luck about the end of September) and IF IF it's all RIGHT we would love to show it in N.Y. in which case we'd be on your doorstep fairly constantly. Greenwood and Morell had met when cast as the leads for the play Hedda Gabler and flown to Jamaica to wed. (The role of Hedda was considered the "female Hamlet" role of the theater world.) Joan Greewood was most famous for her stage performances (starting her career after WWII), but also appeared in many film and television roles. She was voted by Empire Magazine as #63 in their "100 Sexiest Film Stars" list in 1995. Joan Greewood on WIkipedia André Morell was a famous leading man on stage and screen. His stage career began in the early 1930s, w he gained great acclaim and performed alongside such stars as Alec Guiness and John Gielgud. He served in World War II, rising to the rank of Major by 1946. After the war, he became a leading man on television and film, starring in Bridge Over The River Kwai and Ben Hur , among others.
