Proceeds of the sale of all lithographs and prints in this listing will go to UNICEF. Extremely low starting prices, in some cases one twentieth of similar lots currently on offer on Ebay. All the prints and lithographs have been authenticated by a leading art expert as to the source being Verve Magazine or the US printed of Arabian Nights series and COA can be issued if required. He is also familiar with the infrequently used printed term " epreuve d'essai finale proof " and the collection of late Francois Rouper. This " epreuve d'essai finale proof " was the last lithograph printed before the *b on a tirer proof * and often replaced it. 1960 Original Chagall Colour Lithograph is the Frontpiece from Dessin Pour La Bible series published in Verve Magazine Volume 37-38.This orginal lithograph in French is called & translation is called *Job Desespere* (Job in Dispair) Published by Teriade . Printer was the master printer Mourlot Freres. References Abrams 1987,Mourlot 1963,Chagall Dimensions are 35 x 25cm. All are inpristine condition and contain on Verso a graphic of Chagall which distinguishes them from the later 6500 reprint which do not have graphic of Chagall on the back.These reprints unsigned are currently selling on for between 440 to 850 pounds sterling. The reprints are listed Goldmart Art at 700 pound sterling. Teriade limited this edition of Verve to 80 copies of which we currently hold 7 and have sold a further 2 to collectors. This Verve Magazine copy is in pristine condition.The large balance of remaining copies are in Academic Institutions throughout the world. Extremely rare and should be distinguished from the later 6500 print run that does not have a Chagall Graphic on the Verso . Chagall was born in Vitebsk , Belarus (then in the Russian Empire ), the oldest of nine children in the close-knit Jewish family led by his father, a herring merchant and his mother, Feiga-Ita. This period of his life, described as happy though impoverished, appears in references throughout Chagall's work. Beginning to study painting in 1906 under famed local artist Yehuda Pen , Chagall moved to St. Petersburg only a few months later in 1907 . T he joined the school of the Society of Art Supporters and studied under Nikolai Roerich , encountering artists of every school and style. From 1908 -1910 he studied under Leon Bakst at Zvyagintseva School . This period was difficult for Chagall -- Jewish residents at the time could only live in St. Petersburg with a permit, and he was jailed for a brief time.
