Offering a 1960 USS Enterprise So-Called Dollar. Pedigree: None. Honoring our first nuclear aircraft carrier. This piece should not be confused with the 2 1/2 inch silver and bronze pieces also minted at that time. Professionally slabbed by NGC MS 65!
11,000 medals were distributed at christening and a surplus of 4,000 were bought by a souvenir dealer. Dies were destroyed.
So-Called Dollar publication by Hibler and Kappen references this piece as HK-578. A nice piece considering it is 49 years old. R-3 for rarity, with 501 to 2000 known to exist. Circulated coinage with this low mintage would demand a much higher premium. I think SCDs are an untapped, unknown market.
