It has been said the Seminole tribe settled t as far back as 10,000 BC. For hundreds of years, the Seminole Indians basically controlled almost all of Florida. Even when the Europeans arrived, at first they were not interested in the area of Florida, but showed more curiosity toward the southern part of the nation (Virginia, North Carolina, etc), so the Seminoles still had control of their homeland.Unfortunately, things took a turn around 1732, when settlers started heading southward into Florida. Once they arrived, many Seminole Indians were kidnapped, tortured, or killed. But the Seminoles held their own ground and stayed within their territory, many migrating near w Tampa exists today.The language spoken by the Seminole Indians was known as Muskogee. They typically hunted and fished the abundant waters off the coast of Florida. Since the temperature w they lived was warm, their homes were very simple, consisting of poles and thatched roofs. When the Spanish had arrived to Florida, the Seminoles often emulated them by wearing brightly colored clothing. When the 20th century arrived, the white man was overtaking much of the United States. Florida was an ideal area to develop, and many of the Seminole Indians were forced out of the area. Those who stayed ended up being forced to work for money, either as an agricultural helper or a tourist attraction. In 1957, a law was passed declaring the tribes in Florida were officially the Seminole Tribe of Florida. In 1970, the Seminoles were awarded over $12 million by the government because of land taken from them by the United States military. Today the tribe is still in existence and is a proud part of the state of Florida's rich heritage. This particular Seminole handmade Woman's Dress was made by the Seminole Indians. This Woman's Dress is full and it is very colorful and it is a size large. This Dress was made for a Seminole Indian woman originally and it is a size Medium The waist is 22 - 24 inches and t is some give because it is elastic Then, the dress is very full as you can see in the photo. Originally this dress was custom made for a Native American Seminole Indian and t are no size tags, as it was hand made. This Indian dress could certainly be worn, as it is still in very good shape and well preserved. And, it also would make a great display piece. This Seminole Indian Woman's Dress was made by hand from colorful fabrics that the Seminoles used to make their clothing. The Seminoles, living in warm weather Florida, preferred light cotton material over leather or buckskin. The Seminole Dress is very colorful. The Native American Indian Dress is an authentic dress of the Seminole Indian Women - and after it was worn by a Seminole Indian for a time it was trade to a Denver Couple who collected Native American Indian art and artifacts. This Dress, as with most Seminole clothing is a bright multi-color patchwork style clothing made with strip quilting construction techniques. We have shown the inside of this dress so that you can see the patchwork type of construction on the inside of this dress. Even though we say this top is handmade, it must be noted that the Seminole Indians have used Sewing Machines for many years in the actual sewing of their clothing, but we still feel the basic making of this Top is hand done.
