Disneyland Records LG-729....45 rpm....10"....©1961 Walt Disney Productions Hooray for Professor Ludwig Von Drake...and he would be the first one to say it! is a fantastic 45 rpm Disneyland label record, one of their "Little Gem" series of singles for children. Ludwig Von Drake, Donald Duck's "other" uncle (with all due respect to Uncle Scrooge McDuck) is a wacky pedagogue of indeterminate Bavarian origin, and a self-proclaimed expert on everything. He was created to appear in the first episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color in 1961, the season Disney moved from ABC to NBC to take advantage of the new network's emphasis on color broadcasts. Von Drake was so successful at explaining the mechanics of television and the colors of the spectrum that he soon developed quite a following, and starred in many more episodes of Disney's anthology TV series--not to mention the award-inning theatrical featurette, A Symposium On Popular Songs . As with most Disney characters, the inspired brilliance of Ludwig Von Drake was a collaborative effort of writers and animators, but in this case, the shining star must go to Von Drake's voice: the great Paul Frees . Vocal chameleon Frees' talents are too many to be listed , but suffice it to say that from Disneyland to Walt Disney World, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion to Rankin-Bass Animagic Specials and even Funny Face Drink Mix and the Pillsbury Doughboy, the sounds of Paul Frees are an indelible part of American Pop culture's soundtrack. Frees was also brilliant at improvisation, a skill which enhances his Von Drake role no end. This record dates from the character's 1961 introduction, and features Frees singing and speaking in two tracks from the Disneyland Records LP devoted to Von Drake. Songs I'm Ludwig Von Drake and Green With Envy Blues (this one heard in his TV debut) were both written by Walt Disney's legendary song writers Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, who would soon win Oscars for their Mary Poppins score. The Shermans' catalog also includes songs for Winnie the Pooh , The Jungle Book , Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the indelible It's A Small World . This wonderful record is in fantastic, nearly-new condition--a rare thing for a children's record. The vinyl is virtually pristine, and the discs printed information is printed right on it in the center--no applied paper label! The illustrated sleeve is impossibly crisp with sharp corners. Its only concession to age is a tiny smudge on the front (between the "D" and "R" of "Drake) and a minimal amount or "ring rubbing" on the back. A fantastic item of all-too-rare Von Drake memorabilia: just the thing for the discerning Disney fan--or Know-It-All--in anyone's life!
