About Bill Brandt: Born in 1904, Bill Brandt became Britain's most influential and internationally admired photographer of the 20th century. The striking images Brandt created are essential works and have made him a monumental figure in photographic art history. His innovations expanded the medium of photography and gave his work a timeless quality. As stated by Mark Haworth-Booth, curator at London's Victoria & Albert Museum: "No other British photographer has made so many memorable photographs as Bill Brandt. He excelled in all fields - social, Surrealism, night photography, documentary, landscape, portraiture and the nude.” Brandt considered his nudes as his favorite work and is acknowledged to have taken the genre into ground breaking new areas, creating abstractions in which the landscape of the body meets the landscape of the natural world. Brandt’s nudes are also considered as his most innovative work. “In photography only Edward Weston has made nudes of equal power,” said John Szarkowski, Director Emeritus of MoMA’s Department of Photography. Dramatic use of the contrasting values of black and white, and exploration of optical deformations, cause the nudes to read as daring studies in abstractions, somewhat reminiscent of Henry Moore’s sculptures. Many of his "distorted" nudes were made with an old wooden and brass camera he found in a second hand shop. The camera had a wide angle lens with a pinhole aperture and like nineteenth-century cameras it had no shutter. The acute distortion produced by the lens created an abstract perspective in his subsequent landscapes and nudes. The images he created with the unnatural perspective, unusual viewpoints and the use of strange lighting shocked people at the time, but forever broadened the boundaries of imagery. Most of his influential work with nudes was taken in Normandy and on the Sussex Coast . In 1961 Brandt published his iconic collection of nudes in a volume entitled "Perspective Of Nudes" which was printed in beautiful photogravure. His first retrospective exhibition opened in 1969 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edward Steichen and John Szarkowski were both involved with the production. This exhibition set forth a series ...
