1962 Hans HOFMANN German Exhibition EXTREMELY RARE Cat. Description HANS HOFMANN (1880-1966) For serious scholars, archivists collectors and dealers of Hans Hofmann's work, this is an IMPORTANT and EXTREMELY SCARCE German exhibition catalogue from 1962. You simply won't find it anyw else. This catalogue documents IMPORTANT Hofmann works from the 1940's and 1950's. It even documents the provenance and names of many of the collectors - names such as Mr. and Mrs. Chrysler, Joseph Hirshhorn, and others. The softcover catalogue is entirely in German, and states "Ausstellung 1962" - or "Exhibition 1962". The exhibition took place at the following locations: Frankische Galerie om Marientor, Nurnberg Kolnischer Kunstverein, Koln KongreBhalle, Berlin The introductory essay was written by Ludwig Grote, dateline Nurnberg, im Marz 1962 T is also a German translation of Clement Greenberg's essay on Hofmann from the ealy Sixties, as will as an excerpt from writings by Tennessee Williams on the artist, along with other text as well. At the end is what appears to be a Chronology, and Checklist of 95 works in the exhibition. This volume measures 7/25 x 9 .25 inches and has 28 pages. The cover illustration is in color and t are 21 black and white illustrations. This is an EXTREMELY RARE impossible to find European catalogue from the Early Sixties on one of the most IMPORTANT and INFLUENTIAL painters of the Twentieth Century, who inspired generations of artists -like Wolf Kahn, Louise Nevelson, Alfred Jensen, Red Grooms, Robert de Niro, Sr. Nell Blaine and so many others. What makes this his catalogue even more special is that it was published Hofmann's lifetime, four years before he passed away. T is notable wear to the cover (front and back, as well as peeling to the spine), but the inside pages are clean and fresh and otherwise in good condition considering the age of this scarce find. NOT ex-library; NO markings whatsoever. Hans Hofmann Biography Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important figures of postwar American art. Celebrated for his exuberant, color-filled canvases, and renowned as an influential teacher for generations of artists—first in his native Germany, then in New York and Provincetown—Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism. As a teacher he brought to America direct knowledge of the work of a celebrated group of European modernists (prior to World War I he had lived and studied in Paris) and developed his own philosophy of art, which he expressed in essays which are among the most engaging discussions of painting in the twentieth century, including "The Color Problem in Pure Painting—Its Creative Origin." Hofmann taught art for over four decades; his impressive list of students includes Helen Frankenthaler, Red Grooms, Alfred Jensen, Wolf Kahn, Lee Krasner, Louise Nevelson and Frank Stella. As an artist Hofmann tirelessly explored pictorial structure, spatial tensions and color relationships. In his earliest portraits done just years into the twentieth century, his interior scenes of the 1940s and his signature canvases of the late 1950s and the early 1960s, Hofmann brought to his paintings what art historian Karen Wilkin has described as a "range from loose accumulations of brushy strokes…to crisply tailored arrangements of rectangles…but that somehow seems less significant than their uniform intensity, their common pounding energy and their consistent physicality."
