1962 Shirriff Baseball Coin Complete Master Set Very High Grade Set âe" 200 Coins in the Master Set This Very Rare Set is a Canadian version of the Salada Junket plastic player coins issued in the U.S. Backs specify an issue of 200 coins; 21 players from the Salada set were not issued by Shirriff. Because the Canadian coins were produced after the U.S. version they are not found with all the variations known in Salada. Shirriff coins were packed in bags of potato chips, with each coin sealed in a clear cellophane wrapper. The Canadian coins are much scarcer than the U.S Salada coin because of only one print run compared to two print runs of the Salada coins. The Shirriff coin set tends to be much more difficult to complete than the Salada set.The 2008 Beckett Catalog of Baseball Cards has this set listed at $2,000Just last week, Two PSA graded Shirriff coins sold for Record Prices in the Andy Madec Spring Auction: 1962 Shirriff Coins #41 Mickey Mantle PSA 9 Mint sold for $725 1962 Shirriff Coins #150 Roberto Clemente PSA 10 Gem Mint sold for $1,715The coins in this sharp-looking set grade from Ex/Mt to Mint condition with most being at least Near Mint. This extremely attractive full-color coin set was issued one plastic-with-paper-insert coin per package with Shirriff Potato Chips. The set features all the major stars of the era including Mantle, Mays, Kaline, Berra, Clemente, Koufax, Banks, Yastrzemski and many more. In 1962, Salada Tea and Shirriff Potato Chips promoted their products by issuing a set of plastic backed baseball coins with paper inserts. The idea behind the set was simple, while at the same time elaborate âe" each of the then 18 Major League teams would have 10 players represented, one for each of the eight fielding positions plus two pitchers. This made for the 180 coin set that was originally produced. However, midway through production, the National League expanded by adding two teams âe" the New York Mets and the Houston Colt .45âe(tm)s. Salada/Shirriff then shifted gears and updated their entire set to reflect the resultant changes. Many new players were added, some were traded and some were dropped. The 1962 end-product was a set of numbered coins that totaled 221 different players and made up a 180 player original set and a 200 player revised set. The Shirriff coins were only issued in the revised set. Please email me with any questions. Buyer pays a fixed shipping cost of $15. Insurance included. Will ship to anyw in the US and Canada only. Will accept paypal or money order. Paypal preferred to speed up the shipping process. These coins are similar to the Topps, Old London, Pins, Chips, Jello, Armour, POGs, Disc and Salada coins in the 1960âe(tm)s but are much scarcer because they were issued in bags of potato chips in Canada Only.
