The Oklahoma Sooners had arrived in Lincoln before the news came out about the shooting on Friday afternoon, and the schools' administrators and coaches determined they should play the game despite the circumstances. The teams were battling for the Big Eight Conference title, and the Sooners had one more regular season game the following week against Oklahoma State.The Cornhuskers prevailed, 29-20, to win the conference crown and went on to play Auburn in the Orange Bowl of New Year's, winning that game and finishing with a 10-1 record and a #6 national ranking.
