Up for sale: Two SILVER Kennedy halves, one 1964 Philadelphia mint & one 1964-D from the Denver mint. This represents all Kennedy's minted that year as there were none minted in San Francisco that year, not even the proofs. Due to coin hoarding, for the next 3 years, the wonderful U.S. Governement made the "brilliant" decision to manufacture only the SMS series (Special Mint Set ), which were better than uncirculated, but not nearly as good as a proof set and they bore no mint mark. As you might imagine, they went over like a lead ballon. The mint blamed collectors for the hoarding of the old coins, never making the connection that people were saving the old ones because they actually contained Silver (instead of the new copper-nickel alloy). DUH! Both coins are in above average condition. Grading is subjective, but they are probably both AU, might be MS if you stretch it. There is no deep wear, no scratches, just the usual bag marks, but not excessive. There is plenty of detail remaining in Kennedy's hair. The Phillie is almost unc, and the Denver has just a bit more rub and some slight peripheral toning at the edges of the obverse side. If you're a dipper (not me), it would probably bring Denver up a notch. I may be under-selling these coins, but I try to describe them to a "T." As a seller and a buyer, I try to describe them in detail , the good and the not so good. These scans are shot through very thin mylar, and if needed, I have scans of the reverse that I can e-mail, but there's nothing unusual about the reverse, maybe a tad less toning and a bit more shine. Actual Silver Weight is .03618 Troy ounce per coin .
