Heard Museum Winner VINTAGE "YEI" FIGURAL DECORATED NAVAJO RUG 44"X 31"This piece won Heard Museum 1965 and Rug and Jewelry Exhibit and bears reservation made, Navajo Arts and craft Guild tag. The award ribbon is in excellent condition but the paper tag is ripped in half. The rug is in excellent condition with no tears, stains or loose seams.Wonderful coloration in the weaving featuring earthtones.I was told that this rug was made in Many Farms, Arizona by one of the "Begay" cousins. This particular artist wove the rug outside of a HOGAN (a log and thatch grass and mud hut. The wool for the rug was from sheep that were raised for the yarn and for eating Mutton Stew). This intriquing "Yei" decorated rug is strongly representative of Navajo ceremonies centered on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing. The "Holy People" portrayed in the Yei weavings communicate between the Navajo people and their Gods and are believed to restore health and spiritual well being when called upon in a properly conducted ceremony. Please your satisfaction is guranteed.
