1 pg. TLS, August 30, 1965, by Texas Governor John Connally (1917-93) 2 years after being shot by Lee Henry Oswald. In this letter to Esther Rausch of the TV News Program "Meet the Press" Connally thanks her for sending a transcript of the Meet the Press program that was aired in Minneapolis. Not too much detail needed here as anyone with any historical acumen know that Connally was sitting in the front seat of the limousine carrying President Kennedy when he was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963. One of the bullets that struck Kennedy also wounded Connally. Connally was wounded in the chest, wrist and thigh. Connally, as political payback, served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy under JFK in 1961. He resigned to successfully run for Governor of Texas, a position he held from 1963-69. He served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (under Nixon) from 1971-72, and refused to take the position unless Nixon helped out George H. W. Bush-- saving Bush's political career (Nixon appointed Bush U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.). According to one historian, Nixon was "awed" by Connally, and Henry Kissinger noted that Connally was the only cabinet member that Nixon did not disparage behind his back.
