STP INDY TURBINE CAR No. 40 PARNELLI JONES

VINTAGE * MPC 1:20 SCALE MODEL * KIT 3000-300 with BOX

ANDY GRANATELLI'S STP TURBINE CAR No. 40, WHICH RAN AT INDY IN 1967, WAS THE 1st COMPETITIVE TURBINE CAR TO RACE IN THE FAMOUS 500 MILE RACE. POWERED BY A PRATT & WHITNEY ST6B-62 TURBINE ENGINE, IT PUT OUT 550 B.H.P. AT 6230 R.P.M. THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM AND UNIQUE ASSYMETRICAL WISHBONE CHASSIS OF STRESSED ALUMINUM ALLOY CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO ITS HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS. THE FUEL SUPPLY WAS CARRIED IN THE CHASSIS. SUSPENSION WAS THE CONVENTIONAL A ARM INDEPENDANT TYPE. 12" DISC BRAKES ON ALL 4 WHEELS, PLUS A UNIQUE FLIP-UP REAR AIR BRAKE MADE UP THE BRAKING SYSTEM. FIBERGLASS BODY PANELS WERE USED ON THE CAR. RACING WEIGHT, WITH FULL TANKS & NO DRIVER WAS1600 POUNDS.

PARNELLI JONES WAS LEADING THE 1967 INDY RACE BY 50 SECONDS WITH 3 LAPS TO GO, WHEN A BEARING FAILURE IN THE TRANSMISSION DROPPED THE CAR OUT OF THE RACE.

** DURRING THE RACE IT BROKE 19 EXISTING SPEED MARKS.

** No.40 LED 177 LAPS OF THE 200 LAP RACE

** THE TURBINE CAR HAD THE FASTEST LAP OF THE RACE AT 164.9 MPH

** JONES No.40 STARTED IN 6th POSITION, ON THE 2nd TURN OF LAP 1 HE TOOK THE LEAD, THAT HE HELD FOR 177 LAPS
