Very interesting, and extremely important historicaly, broadcast reporter's file, consisting of (15) pages, some quite long, of original United Press wire service teletype messages concerning the Apr 4 1968, shooting and assassination of the Civil Rights leader and Nobel Prize recipient Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, providing a chronological real-time narrative of the tragedy, commencing with, "Memphis, TN: Dr. Martin Luther King was shot outside a Memphis hotel this afternoon. His condition was not immediately known." The bulletins continue with precise details of the shooting by witnesses standing with Dr. King, description of the suspect (later found to be James Earl Ray) and his getaway, shock expressed by President Lyndon Johnson and other high officials, the subsequent riots in the wake of the killing, and finally, the announcement by Attorney General Ramsey Clark, "that James Earl Ray, wanted for the slaying of Martin Luther King, has been arrested in London." Included, also, is an official Federal Bureau of Investivation, Atlanta, Georgia, District Office, press release, dated Jun 8 1968, providing details of the capture and arrest of Ray. Found with the archive was a scratch sheet listing the names of various individuals and the telephone numbers of a handful of broadcast stations. Dr King was only 39 years old when he was struck down, and was in Memphis to lead a strike of predominently African-American sanitationmen striving for better pay and working conditions. We are most fortunate to have procured this seminal historical Black History and 20th century Civil Rights Movement archive and have the opportunity to offer it to the general public. Small clipped magazine photo included. When bidding, please note that this is primary, original source material and most probably unique . Good condition throughout. *** We have been in the paper Americana business since 1953 and are members of both the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as numerous other collector organizations.
