(2) 1968 D Silver Kennedy Half Dollars PCGS Certified Mint State MS 63 & Mint State MS 64 The Final Years of circulating Silver US Coinage Silver coins, in the form of Kennedy Half Dollars, were the last coins minted for circulation in the United States. 1969 was the last year that silver was used in circulating coin composition. Up to and including 1964, all modern silver coinage was 90% pure silver. From 1965 until 1969, all circulating silver half dollars were made of 40% pure silver. In 1970, the Kennedy Half dollar was not made for circulation. The circulating dimes and quarters were no longer made of silver from 1965 - on. Special silver Mint Sets have been made over the years but none were made of coins intended to circulate.
