Here's a nice opportunity for any Eisenhower Dollar or Modern US Coin fans out there!! This is a listing for a nice 1971-D Friendly Eagle Eisenhower Dollar graded MS 64 by NGC, one of the top two Third Party Grading Services in the market today. The Friendly Eagle, also known as RDV-006 or FS-901 is the most distinctive and interesting of the "new" Eisenhower varieties that have been discovered over the past few years. It features a unique reverse which is not found anywhere else in the Eisenhower Dollar series. The theory on this reverse style is that it was originally intended for a run of 1971-S Copper-Nickel Clad Proof Eisenhower Dollars, a project that ended up being abandoned for unknown reasons until 1973. Rather than destroy all of these dies, it was decided to send some to the Denver Mint to get some use out of them and allow Denver to get a head start on striking business strike Eisenhower Dollars. It is estimated that the Friendly Eagle reverse comprises from 1-10% of the entire mintage of 1971-D Eisenhower Dollars. Whatever the number made, they are quite scarce today and are only becoming more and more popular since NGC and PCGS started attributing this variety in the past couple of years. This coin is one of 14 coins certified by NGC at this level, with , 18 65's, 5 66's and a single 67 higher. MS 64 coins are great read more
