Slate blue cloth with gilt-stamped spine, 9.25 x 6.25 in., 2696 pages (plus 414 pages to supplement), illustrated. Mild soiling to top edges, otherwise clean, tight, fine, and attractive. "This set of five volumes begins the publication of the papers of Dwight David Eisenhower. . . ." The introduction summarizes the criteria for selecting and editing the papers: "In a sense, we could let General Eisenhower do the choosing: that is, we decided to select and annotate only those documents which he himself had written or dictated or which he had taken a direct part in preparing. In fact, to use any other criterion would be to publish the papers of an office, not a man. . . . From the start we decided to publish only those documents that Eisenhower had signed or initialed. We have not included directives, memorandums, or other papers issued 'by the order of General Eisenhower' but signed by one of his subordinates. Nor have we included the transcripts of press conferences, minutes of meetings, speeches, and other records of what Eisenhower said.
