Roosevelt dimes are one of the most popular coins to collect. An easy and fun way to fill in sets of circulated grade. High grade uncirculated coins are extremely rare and difficult to find. AN EXAMPLE: the 1946 to 1964 Roosevelt dime silver series collection. In this series of 48 coins t is an average of 29 coins graded to an ms67fb of each coin required in a PCGS holder. A total of 1399 ms67fb and a total of 32 ms68fb are in existence. In MS66FB the average of the same 48 required coins is 182 in a PCGS Holder. Understanding the lingo MS means: The term corresponding to the numerical grades MS-60 through MS-70, used to denote a business strike coin that never has been in circulation. A Mint State coin can range from one that is covered with marks (MS-60) to a flawless example (MS-70) FB or FT means: Full separation in both the upper and lower pair of crossbands on the torch, no disturbance of the separation. Ngc uses FT (full torch). Notoriously the weakest part of the strike thus it becomes a rare combination of a great coin and with full bands. MS-64 "Mint State" "64" This grade is also called "Borderline Gem" at times, as well as "Very Choice BU." T will be no more than a couple of significant marks or, possibly, a number of light abrasions. The overall visual impact of the coin will be positive. The strike will range from average to full and the luster breaks will be minimal. MS-65 "Mint State" "65" This grade is also called "Gem" or "Gem Mint State" or "Gem BU." T may be scattered marks, hairlines or other defects, but they will be minor. The coin must be well struck with positive (average or better) eye appeal. This is a NICE coin! ....(note) If you buy a gem bu roll, DEMAND that all coins are this grade or higher or send them back.. MS-66 "Mint State"66" This is not only a Gem-quality coin, but the eye appeal ranges from "above average" to "superb." The luster is usually far above average, and any toning can not impede the luster in any significant way. This is an extra-nice coin. MS-67 "Mint State" "67" A superb-quality coin! Any abrasions are extremely light and do not detract from the coin’s beauty in any way. The strike is extremely sharp (or full) and the luster is outstanding. This is a spectacular coin! Choice Uncirculated An Uncirculated coin grading MS-63 or MS-64 Compare Roosevelt prices and population to other modern coins such as the 1955 double die Lincoln of which an estimated 20,000 were minted. History What is known for certain is that the American public in 1945 was clamoring for some memorial to their fallen leader, whose passing had come just as he was about to enjoy a sweet victory after years of struggle and worry.
