Here is another of my beloved Colnagos up on the Auction Block (.... money, money, money, makes the world go round).
Please notice, right from the git go, that this offering is NOT A COMPLETE BICYCLE but rather, almost so. Everything needed for a Complete Bicycle EXCEPT,NOT INCLUDED: Wheels, front and rear, and cables and housing (AND top tube cable clips!) for brakes and derailleurs. Hope that is clear. Now for the goodies that are included. The frame and fork are a Colnago Super built circa 1973/74 - that is, the versions with only brazed on Water bottle bosses, chainstay cable stop, and BB cable guides (CAMPY on top of the Bottom Bracket shell). The chromed fork crown has only a Club on top, on each side, and the fork tangs have two holes. There is only one Club cut in the lugs, as well as one in the BB shell. The decals are, to my eye, the nicest design Ernesto ever used (...well, maybe NOT these down tube ones). And yep, the decals and paint are ORIGINAL. Actually in quite overall lovely shape. There are a few scuffs and chips but not too bad especially for this baby's age. Check out the BB shell which is usually pretty trashed. There are some spots of 'touch up paint' - I wish folks wouldn't do that, just put on some wax and call er good!!! As for the Campagnolo parts, it is a complete Nuovo Record Gruppo with the added bonus of Team Molteni/Merckx DRILLIUM on the large chain wheel and early long graceful brake levers. Also, the seatpost is milled with flutes the way Fast Eddy liked em. Please note though, the seatpost is the shorty version: shaft of only 130 mm and some of the flutes appear rather deep. The Cinelli stem is the first aluminum Model 1/A with the hex head handlebar binder and usually a 7 mm allen headed expander bolt. This one is also milled with flutes and the expander has been replaced with a 6 mm allen headed expander bolt (a Black TTT). The crank arms are 170 mm long and stamped with 'Strada 170' along with a 3 in a diamond for 1973 manufacture; they have had the anodization removed and been lightly polished. The front changer is the first Record one with a Circlip, circa 1974 and the rear gear is a Nuovo Record with Patent 72 in nice clean condition, however, as the norm, the pulley wheels do show signs of developing cracks. The Campy clamp on down tube levers are the early type with chromed backing plates with cable housing stops and, best of all, are lightened with milling slots! The pedals, again early type with toe strap guides, are in good shape with only minor scrapes to the cages; steel dust caps have slight roughness. The saddle is a Cinelli Padded with some scuffs. Record Campy headset is also earlier version with the coveted Measurements are as follows: Seat Tube: approximately 60 cm. Center to Center Top Tube: approximately 59 cm. Center to Center Standover: approximately 85.5 cm. (about 33 and 5/8 inches), with one type of tubular tires. This will vary with tires, pressure, and rims used. WARNING and DISCLAIMER: The milling and drilling on these parts WAS NOT DONE in the Campagnolo, Colnago, or Cinelli factories! The work was done later in a small independent bike shop or by an individual racer on their own bike, like it usually was done back in the day. This was the typical historic norm, I know cuz I was one of those who did it way back then. The Team bikes, and even the factory Replica Team bikes, were extremely rare - much rarer even than the Super Pantografatas! If this was an "authentic" Molteni Team, I would be asking at least 3 times this amount of money! (...actually, it wouldn't be for sale). FINAL NOTES: 1) Please, please, please ask any and...
