...JOSE BERNABE CAMPECHANO...ONE OF THE GREAT LIVING MASTERS OF MEXICAN FOLK ART...I am offering a piece from my personal collection, owned over 35 years.... RARE & PRISTINE... CANNISTER WITH LID ... 1974 Living outside of Guadalajara in a small town known for its pottery traditions lives this man and his extended family. He is so honored for his fine petatillo work, known in our country as decorative 'crosshatching', he has helped bring this exquisite technique to the forefront of the world. Mexican presidents have commissioned him to create work for presentation to Queen Elizabeth 11 and the Pope. Both of these pieces are now in their permanent collections as well as in museums world wide. He is featured in the book ' GREAT MASTERS OF MEXICAN FOLK ART' , the permanent collection of Fomento Cultural Banamex. A wonderful picture of his work is also captured in the book ' NAGUAL IN THE GARDEN' . Adding to that, these pieces were on my dining table when our home was photographed and featured in San Diego Home Garden Magazine. I PURCHASED THIS DIRECTLY FROM JOSE IN 1975 IN TONOLA. I love the items with lids, tho you find few of them intact any longer. CANNISTER w/ LID (or maybe a sugar bowl? ): The height of the pot is a good 6" with the top on. The measurement from handle edge to handle edge is 7". THIS PIECE IS ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE! YOU CAN SEE THE RIMS OF CANNISTER, LID & HANDLES IN THE PICTURES. The design features birds, flowers, butterflies,herons, and gorgeous deer. I purchased this in Tonala, and have been to the studio and home of Jose Bernabe a number of times over the years. I first saw his work in Tijuana in the early 1970's and was dumbstruck at how beautiful it was. This was a time when the government used to have stores through the country in tourist areas, highlighting the finest of Mexican folk art. After that I sought out Senor Bernabe and started collecting enough pieces to serve Thanksgiving dinner. His family is all involved in the petatillo process, but no one holds a candle to his personal work. One of the big differences you see between his older work and the new work (besides the price!) is that they stopped using their old kiln and have a new kiln. The newer pottery now has a bright shiny look to it. It depends on your taste, but I greatly prefer the older kiln works. This piece has been fired twice, at over 1000 degrees, a very high temp which results in the characteristic, shiny enamel finish as well as the expulsion of the lead content. The traditional colors you find are black, red, and white although Senor Bernabe has included green and occasionally you find some pieces with blue in them. When I visited him the last time, he said the blue was for people who had commissioned the pieces with it. Finding his older pieces in one piece without cracks and with the lids is getting harder and harder. This piece is approximately years old and has been used once or twice a year when we have big dinners - used and cared for lovingly. It also not only was made by him, not his family, it was made in the old kiln...so has the traditional look, not the bright shiny look of todays pottery coming from their taller. It is completely water proof, can be used and can be one of the centerpieces of your collection for decades to come. The CANNISTER & LID is a 1 pound, without any packing materials...so I have quoted a price that allows for double box fragile art packing, insurance and tracking.The costs includes insurance and signature. I respectfully ask you understand that irreplaceable and priceless art pieces deserve the packing that hopefully insures their safe arrival and also that you complete the transaction within 36 hours of the end of the auction.
