This is a fabulous piece of NEBRASKA CORNHUSKER & FLORIDA GATORS FOOTBALL MEMORABILIA The item in this lot is a BOWL COACHES GIFT from the 1974 SUGAR BOWL And, this gift was given to a NEBRASKA COACH from the 1974 SUGAR BOWL COMMITTEE Over the years, it has become a common practice to give the Players and Coaches a Gift for playing in a Bowl Game. Because Coaches and players are NOT paid any money for participating in a Bowl game, it became an accepted practice to give them a nice gift. Even though the University is given money for the participation of their school team, the players and Coaches are not paid any money. It is simply a part of their job to try and get their team to a Bowl game, because it is good for the Athletic Budget and it is good for recruiting. In the 1940's and 1950's, it became a practice to start giving out Bowl Watches and Bowl Cuff Links and Bowl Tie Tacks. As cuff links and tie tacks became used less and less, watches and rings became the normal gift given to players and Coaches. And generally, the larger the Bowl, the nicer the gift. It is also common for Bowls to give a couple smaller gifts, like t-shirts or shorts or jacket and hats and perhaps a sweatshirt and then also a watch or ring. This Bowl Gift is from the 1974 SUGAR BOWL This Bowl gift is a 1974 SUGAR BOWL COACHES MENS WATCH And this gift was given to a Nebraska Assistant Coach and the Coach was Assistant Coach Jim Ross. This Sugar Bowl Watch is a beautiful and rare Sugar Bowl gift. Jim Ross and Bob Devaney both came from Michigan and when Bob Devaney was named the Head Coach for the Wyoming Cowboys in 1957, Jim Ross was part of his first staff. Bob Devaney and Jim Ross remained at Wyoming until 1961. In 1962 when Bob Devaney was offered the Head Coaching job at the University of Nebraska, Jim Ross came to Lincoln with Devaney and remained a valuable Assistant Coach throughout the Devaney era and into the Tom Osborne era. He performed many different duties and after his Coaching days he remained on staff and helped with fund raising and other functions. This Bowl Gift - A 1974 Sugar Bowl Coaches Mens Watch - came from the estate of Coach Jim Ross and we will be selling several wonderful items from his estate. This item also comes with a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY and the COA is signed by a Graduate of the CERTIFIED APPRAISERS GUILD OF AMERICA C.A.G.A. the leading Certified Appraisal Organization in America Today This 1974 SUGAR BOWL COACHES MEN'S WATCH features the SUGAR BOWL TROPHY on the face of the watch Above the trophy it says, SUGAR BOWL CLASSIC And then on both sides of the trophy it says, 19 74 The watch is a Hamilton Gold Electroplate Bezel Swiss Made 702002-4 The Watch has a beautiful gold band and the watch is gold.
