1978-79 Indianapolis Racers Media Guide - From Wayne Gretzky's 1st Year as Pro. Due to the NHL's rule that no team could sign a player under 20 years old in 1978, the WHA's Indianapolis Racers stepped up and signed 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky to a seven-year $1.75 million contract. But despite the young phenom donning Indy's red, white and blue sweater, the team was losing significant amounts of money and only eight games into his career with the Racers it was forced to trade the Great One to the Edmonton Oilers.
