My parents were avid collector hobbyists - both raised with privilege in Philadelphia - my mother the great-grandaughter of a famous inventor, scientist and soldier who was a founding member of the NRA Chapter in Philadelphia, a superb marksman, a Freemason and a gentleman who was inducted into the Sportsman's 'Hall of Fame'. He formed his company in 1903 - he died in 1921 - his product is still sold all over the world today. His son, also a Masonic Brother, took over the company when he became of age and ran it until his death 3 months after I was born in 1956. During his lifetime he set many records as a marksman - some which still stand. He would have competed in the Olympics games had it not been that he and his buddies placed wagers on their shooting. That prevented them from representing the U.S. because they had "earned" money as a result of their wagering. Ironically my grandfather often traveled to competitions just a few miles from w I live now. I was stunned when I found all the articles from a local newspaper in my mom's things from the 40's. I found so many FUN things! T is a letter from the founding publisher and editor of Sports Illustrated heralding their NEW magazine - explaining what kind of a magazine it is and inviting my grandfather to consider advertising his product line in the second issue. They enclosed a copy of their very first issue for him to peruse. I can tell you he chose not to advertise in Sports Illustrated. My parents wedding was a society wedding. They had it all growing up and spent their lives trying to relive the granduer. As a result they kept accumulating and accumulating and they never got rid of a thing. They learned this from their parents who learned it from their parents. So I am left with the results of three generations of spending. My parents met at the Philadephia College of Art. Dad was all about the automobile who went on to design for Ford Motor Co. and then into TV and radio. My mom, raised by a governess to be the consumate housewife was into elephants, dolls, bears, asian art, contemporary design (particularly Danish Modern) and interior decorating. She also knit, created and sewed my wardrobe, was an amazing cook and LOVED baseball (she worked for the Blue Jays from 1976 - 1982 as their caterer during Spring Training) She died in an auto accident, at the end of her life she found her true passion, teddy bears. She became a well known and sought after teddy bear artist with her artwork displayed in a Teddy Bear Museum. My dad passed away, six months after her death and I am left with a HUGE collection that I will be liquidating SO... An art appraiser and friend pointed out the mistakes I had made in the prior listing. For those of you who were watching this item @ 49.99 you will notice that the price has also been corrected. She was with mom when she met the artist and bought the print - and with her when she had it framed. Mom paid several hundred dollars for this signed LE print and then paid nearly $200 to have this properly framed. The glass on the frame is archival, museum quality glass that protects the artwork from sunlight and it is tightly sealed from humidity and moisture. The frame she chose was handpainted for her with colors she chose. She wanted a deep rich aged look. This was done with layers of paint. Starting with the deep red basecoat which was then rubbed with gold and black. She does not remember what the wood is - she only remembers that it was a nice hardwood. I would guess maple - since that mom's favorite wood grain but I do not know for sure either. Because of the error in the artist's ...
