From a private collection of vintage NOS (New Old Stock) vacuum tubes, we are offering: Groove Tubes 6L6 "A" (Sylvania STR387 USA) Quartet (circa 1980) These were originally manufactured for GT by Sylvania (later Phillips ECG) from 1980 thru the closing of the last Phillips USA factory in the USA. Th e "STR" stands for Special Tube Request, which was an upgraded tube for pro audio as "requested" by Ed Johns the head engineer at Fender during this time. The STR387 had doubled Mica insulators and were pumped down to higher vacuum (Tor), much like the JAN spec military types were made, which gave them better performance and longer life in professional touring amps. Special Tube Request tubes were not available to the general public and could ONLY be purchased as factory installed tubes for your Fender or Boogie Amps (or they could also be purchased from a GT, Fender, or Boogie factory service station)NOTE: Mesa's Sylvania (later Phillips) Special Tube Request number (at the time) was STR415, which were just the Fender STR387 with the top mounted getters moved to be side of the plates (these had clear tops like the GE 6L6GC). However the first run had stability issues and was a total loss (side getters were a bad idea for this tube design).
