Walt Harris was of Otoe-Missouria Indian descent, lborn in 1923 in Red Rock Oklahoma. While he was not as well known as artists such as Acee Blue Eagle or Jerome Tiger, his work was widely exhibited and well received. He was encouraged by his grandfather to pursue accurate visual renderings of horses and other animals. He wa self-taught and was best known for his protraits This painting is an example of his watercolor portraits. Image size is 5 by three inches - double matted and ready to be framed to 12 by 10. Included are several pages of documentation including a letter from the Smithsonian and papers concerning an art exhibition, and the original price tag of $100. His fascinating and varied background reflects in the complexity of the subject. At tahe University of Oklahoma he studied journalism, public relations and coaching; he was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne during WWII. Harris was on a football scholarship at the University of Oklahoma and quit football to play professional baseball. "I excelled in athletics" he said, "because as early training as a boy we were taught to win" He felt the games he played as a child "built a desire and also a sense of knowing that nothing is going to come easy."
