1983 STS-8 NASA SHUTTLE CHALLENGER FLIGHT COVERS

This auction is for a collection of (8) Official NASA Limited Edition Numbered Special Event Covers flown aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on Flight STS-8. This cover comes in the original foldout folio issued by the US Postal Service and NASA. The covers have been stored in the original certified mail envlope (included) since receipt in 1983 and are in excellent original condition.

Sequential numbers appearing on back sides of covers: 15087, 19314, 71491, 76600, 78691, 82972, 94897, 263512

Stamp on face of each cover is Scott # 1909 cv$15/each x 8 = $120

Description from folio:

Through the cooperative efforts ofthe US Postal Service and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, this special event cover was developed and carried aboard STS-8, NASA's eighth Space Shuttle flight. This cover is unique because it is the first to record the flight into space with originating andreturning postal cancellations. The cover's front cachet is a reproduction of NASA's official patch design for STS-8 The cachet on the reverse side depicts NASA's 25th anniversary logo The stamp affixed was issued at Kennedy Space Center on August 12, 1983 The August 14, 1983 cancellation date on the front indicates the STS-8 launch date with its cargo of covers, including these Members of the crew were Commander Richard Truly, Daniel Brandenstein, Dale Gardner, Guion Bluford, and William Thornton

Limited Edition - Sequential Numbers

According to an enclosed circular the USPS originally prepared 500,000 covers intended to take the journey into space However only 260,000 were actually loaded aboard the Shuttle, the balance were (apparently) destroyed. This explains why one of the covers included here has a number higher than 260,000

These collection of covers and folios have been stored in their original 1983 cardboard reinforced envelope are in excellent condition.
