This particular specimen is BRILLIANT AND UNCIRCULATED !!! It is absolutely guaranteed to be genuine and authentic! These coins were issued between 1982 and 1991 because of continuing Devaluation of the Peso . 100 years ago, the 8 Reales coin was the standard large silver coin of Mexico and had been so for hundreds of years before that. It contained nearly 8/10 of an ounce, like the American silver dollars. But around 1914 - while Black Jack Pershing was chasing Pancho Villa - the Revolution there led to a steady devaluation of the currency. The peso contained only about 1/2 ounce of pure silver and things kept getting worse. So this coin was issued in order to provide a serious ounce of silver bullion. It has a very attractive image of "Winged Victory" or "Liberty" on the front so it acquired the nickname "Libertad" , which was the name of the "Cap and Rays" 8 Reales coin. On the back is the Symbol of Mexico: An Eagle killing a Snake on a Cactus . Legend has it that the Aztecs - invading from the North about 700 years ago - saw such an event and took it as the Symbol of their Victory over the tribes to the South. I would grade this particular specimen at least MS-63 or better on the front because it has some "contact marks" that are a normal part of the minting and packaging process (when they are put into Rolls of 20 Coins). The Reverse is probably MS-64 or better because none of them are as deep as the few on the front. Altogether it qualifies for the designation "CHOICE". It looks "white" here and there, which is due to reflectivity in the scanner, and it has acquired a light "Frosting" during the past 25 years of remaining untouched, as well as some very light plum-colored toning overall - getting darker around the edges. The coin appears bright and shiny silver in "person". Almost any high-grade Morgan Dollar you can find has been completely Frosted this way, retaining its Original Mint Luster and becoming White in Appearance. New to Coin-Collecting? "Uncirculated" means there is no trace of wear from being handled in trade. "Brilliant" means just what it sounds like and relates to shininess, not lack of wear. MS means "mint state", that it has not been in circulation but as is often the case it can have acquired "contact marks" in the otherwise smooth surface. This is not the same as "wear", which is the gradual abrasion of the surface over time from being handled a great deal . MS-60 means "lots of contact marks, many of them heavy", MS-65 means "very few, all of them light"; MS-70 means "none visible even under magnification" and is an extremely rare grade. The fronts (obverse) of these are prone to this type of marks in the frosty surface because they have relatively wide expanses of smooth area. The Designation "Gem" is reserved for MS-65 or Higher and it must be at least that on both sides - you can't "average" them ; "Choice" is MS-63 or 64.
