The Uncirculated Roll prices for these coins has risen greatly over the past decade. These coins were mistakenly Brass Plated at the U.S. Mint in Denver in 1985. And Brass Plated Too Boot ***"Brass Plated Planchet" "Copper Plated Planchet"These coins are real " Moose Coins "This is the whole Story: I lived in Mesa Arizona back in the mid-1980's. There was a coin shop I used to go to in Apache Junction and I was really friendly with the owner of the store and he used to offer me something he thought was special. He had been offered these funny colored Lincolns by a local Bank President that he knew in 1987. And it was this hoard of coins that he purchased. I bought around 10 rolls of coins total. Most of the other coins were sold long ago to other people back in 1988. I had taken a portion of mine and had them Certified back in the late 1980's. This was the only grading service at the time that certified Error coins. I had sold most of the coins for about 6 years (around 1989-1995).I just found a small group I had hiding in a box and I thought I would offer them out to Lincoln Cent Collectors everywhere.I later found out how these were caused: In 1982 the U.S. Mint switched from the Copper-Bronze mixture used from 1909-1982 to a zinc planchet (blank) that they plated with copper. Since this was a new process it took them awhile to get the timing right. During the plating process some of the blanks were not unloaded from the plating tank and each time new zinc blanks were added to the tank. This created a reaction, apparently that if you keep adding zinc and copper layers over and over it creates Brass. This is why they have a look of extreme plating with bumpy or rougher looking fields. This is because the coins were plated over and over and again, only when the tank was completely emptied out, did the brass plated blanks appear. Not thinking anything was different the brass plated planchets were added to the bags of blanks ready to be minted. If these coins were not discovered by a savvy Bank President nobody would know they even existed. There may be small batches that happen every year but if they get circulated you can't tell the difference and nobody would want a Circulated one anyway.I Can pretty much guarantee that you won't find these coins anywhere! I sold more than 400 pieces but these coins are long gone in happy collectors collections everywhere. Even if you do find them they will be one here and there but I have the original hoard and I'm the only person that had these coins ever certified. If you see any of these they are from the original "Yellow-Jacket-Hoard".The 1985-D Lincoln Cent had 5,287,339,926 coins minted at the Denver Mint in 1985. There is no way to tell how many coins that were mistakenly brass plated and how many were actually minted. There are far less brass plated coins that still exist.
