1987 Annual Ballantyne Bell

Dorothy in Oz

This item is from the estate of my 93-year-old mother-in-law, Phyllis Allen, who passed away in June of 2006. She was an avid bell collector (and member of The American Bell Association, aka: ABA, ( ) who amassed 4500 bells. I inherited one-third of these and will be listing some of them over the next few months. Mom put string tags on many items with her own info on when and w she obtained it and, sometimes even how much she paid for it...or other times the asking price she had on it if she took it to a bell meeting. When this TAG INFO is available, I will share it in the listing. If you collect bells, be sure to check my other auction listings, as well as my new eBay store Books Bells and Bargains

Ballantyne Bells were designed, Sculptured and handmade by the "Lost Wax" method, and cast in highest quality Silicon Bronze. Each bell is serially numbered, signed and registered. The maker is ABA member Gerry Ballantyne. If Mom's notes are correct, he started making "Annual" bells in 1972 and made his last in 1996. The bells were all signed and numbered and many buyers were enrolled to receive the same number each year so they could collect a complete set of annual bells that were all the same number. (Mom had one complete same-number set, plus many extras that she bought over the years!)

In addition to the "Annual Ballantyne Bell", t were many years (I believe 1977 thru 1990) that Ballantyne produced a second bell which was referred to as a "Special Bell".

I should also point out that if you have a Ballantyne Bell that is numbered, for example, #96/500 it DOES mean that you have the 96th one of that bell, but it does NOT necessarily mean that 500 were made. That number was the maximum that Ballantyne promised to produce....but if he didn't get that many orders, he didn't produce that many bells. I have Mom's records from Ballantyne that show ACTUAL production numbers and will provide the appropriate info in my listings.

"Dorothy in Oz" was the "1987" Annual Bell". The bell on which you are bidding is #19/300. Only 257 Dorothys were actually made! This heavy bronze bell is approximately 6" tall and weighs over a pound! Around the base is a depiction of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion...and Toto too... traveling down the yellow brick road!

This is quality workmanship and artistry at its finest. Ballantynes are highly coveted by ABA members and often just handed down in the family. This is a rare opportunity to own this limited edition item!
