1993 HAWAII OVERTHROW SOVEREIGN ~.999 Silver Coin RARE~ 100 YEARS The Overthrow Sovereign COIN In Observance~ of the 1OOth Anniversary of the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy On January 17, 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii, established by King Kameharneha I in the opening years of the 19th Century, ceased to exist. Queen Liliuokalani, last ruler of the sovereign nation of Hawaii, was overthrown. The Overthrow was not a popular revolt against a despotic monarch. The people of Hawaii loved their Queen and their freely elected legislature was responsive to the people. It was a coup d'etat, organized by a small group of Americans and foreigners in response to imminent changes in the Hawaiian constitution that would erode their power, diminish their influence and threaten their wealth. It was a last, desperate attempt to preserve their privileged positions. Since their numbers were so small and they had no support among the Hawaiian people, they conspired to have U.S. Marines land in Honolulu to ensure their grab for power would succeed. The Provisional government soughl immediate annexation to the United States to secure their grasp on Hawauan affairs. But newly-elected President Grover Cleveland was skeptical.
