19c Antique Rare South Indian Goddess LakshmiLaxmi Wood Statue Beautiful classic hand-carved wooden statue of LAKSHMI,the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage; and the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. The goddess is here depicted sitting on the lotus. The meaning of the lotus in relation to Shri-Lakshmi refers to purity and spiritual power. Rooted in the mud but blossoming above the water, completely uncontaminated by the mud, the lotus represents spiritual perfection and authority. Lakshmi is depicted with full breasts and four arms. In two of her upper hands she is carrying lotuses, while the normal right is held in ‘abhaya’ – assuring freedom from fear, and the normal left, in ‘varad’ – assuring accomplishment of the desired. Coins are streaming out of both lower hands, emphasizing her association with prosperity. The sculpture has a beautiful arch surrounding Lakshmi with Mahakala or "great time" looming above. And Mahakala is known as the devourer because in the end time destroys everything. Giving this beautiful piece a great symbolic meaning. This wooden statue is a characteristic example of South Indian temple wood-carving. Highly symbolic and sensitively treated, rendered with fine details and delicately painted. Size: H 1 read more
