For your consideration we have here a fine 19c Chinese export sandalwood brise fan worked on both sides equally. This great fan was produced in Canton, China during the height of the 'Old China Trade' around c1850 destined for export to the West. This is the first time I have seen this particular shape especially the top 1/3 of the sticks in any brise fan as well as in any material as the width of the sticks are 1-3/16" at the top which gives the viewer much more subject matter to enjoy when looking at the fan in its opened position. I must always appologize for my photos when I am shooting most wood objects as it is impossible to have each photo consistant in color with the next without shooting outdoors in natural light but the closest color tone is like in photo #3, which is a even rich caramel color. There are a total of (19) sticks which is complete and the scenes flow nicely from stick to stick with the fan opening and closing with ease with a simple flick of the wrist. The two guard sticks are extremely thick having very deep relief work of the finest efforts showing flowers, and figures amoungst outdoor settings similar to what is performed on the inside scenes, but it is the top fortion of the stick that is really special depicting a well done bat with outstretched wings having great details holding onto a large open vase with tassels. The inner sticks which are of a more slender nature depict scenes of numerous figures performing tasks of work and leisure carrying fans and other objects while engaged in conversation either standing or sitting with some wearing large sun hats and even playing board games surrounded in outdoor and garden settings. There are stone bridges, fences, garden seats and a variety of plants, trees, flowers along with buildings and different elements of Chinese architecture. The royal blue silk ribbon is fresh and the gilt metal swing arm is original as well as the hand tied silk tassel. A wonderful export fan in perfect condition except for just a few of the very fine background frets missing and other than that there are no missing sticks, cracks, chips, breaks or repairs just simply a lovely fan. Size: Length 8-1/4" x Width (when fully opened) 15-1/2". This is definately a real keeper so if you collect fans especially Chinese export fans this is a must.
