19C EDO JAPANESE CLOISONNE CHARGER SAMURAI WARRIOR Description This listing is for a fine and unusual, Japanese, Edo period, circa 1865 Cloisonne charger. The charger measures a full 18 inches or 45.5 cm. The charger has a concave shape. The charger features as its main decoration a Samurai warrior in full armor seated on a war horse. The Samurai is shown about to pull back an arrow on a large long bow. The armor at his shoulder is shown flapping in the breeze. He wears a sword at his left hip and his kimono has the chrysanthemums of the imperial house hold. The horse also is armored. Both the horse and rider have a very serious expression on their face. All of this is set against a background of a blue sky and gray ground. Around the edge of the charger there is an intricate border of blue, white and yellow cloisonne. The brass work at the edge of the charger has been gold gilded. This is an unusual for a piece of Japanese cloisonne. My best judgement is that it was made in the late Edo period circa 1860-1868. Because the Samurai was outlawed in the Meiji period starting about 1870. Rather than trying to further explain the intricacies of the decoration on this impressive charger, please refer to the photographs for more on its "look." The condition is excellent. There is no reserve. Shipping anywhere in the US via UPS Ground
