Beautiful, hand-painted Meissen porcelain figurine of pair of lovers from the Italian theater, the Commedia dell'Arte. The heroine, Columbine, holds a birdcage, a symbol of captivity. Her partner is not Harlequin but either Mezzetin or Scaramouche. This group was entitled "The Spanish Lovers," since it was believed (at least by some people) that the costume of the man with the baggy hat was Spanish. The statuette is in perfect condition, made approximately late 1800s. Underneath is the blue underglaze Meissen mark. Height - 6 inches. Meissen group figures from the Commedia dell'Arte in such pristine condition are hard to come by.
