Aloha,
Up for sale from a well known collection in Honolulu Hawaii this Japanese Edo period hanging scroll sum ink and light color on paper painting that depicts a mother monkey with a baby innocently clinging to her accompanied by another adult monkey on a pine tree that is signed Sosen and sealed (attributed to Mori Sosen (1747-1821)). The painting comes in an old inscribed Kiri wood storage box. My Japanese Fine Art appraiser inspected the piece; he confirmed its authenticity, gave me the details above and pointed out that the item has some condition issues. As you can see in the photos there are some fox spots throughout. There are some cracks to the paper, but no large missing or repaired sections of paper loss. The paper is toned a light golden color from age. The painting would benefit from being remounted as there are tears in the bottom part of the scroll. The foxing spots could be removed during the remounting process. Measurements: Painting 48 ¾ inches x 20 inches Scroll 90 inches x 26 inches More information about the artist: Mori Sosens name is almost synonymous with Japanese monkey paintings and he is justly famous for his depictions of the native Japanese monkey. There are many clever fakes of his paintings and it takes a real expert to discern a genuine example from a great copy. Even with Expert eyes, it is still very difficult to discern works of the master from works done in his lifetime by students and close followers. Many copies were done fairly recently in the 20 th century and these are most often executed on silk. These later copies are relatively easy to discern. In some respects, paper is a more sensitive media to capturing nuances of the brush than the silk, and hence there is a preponderance of Sosen’s copies painted on silk rather than on paper. The above painting is done on paper. Provenance information: This hanging scroll painting was handed down in a Japanese family who immigrated to Hawaii in the early 20 th century and was collected by the family’s grandfather who primarily studied calligraphy and to a lesser degree paintings. The painting definitely shows signs of true age and apparently dates back to the time when the artist was active. The detail of the monkeys faces and in particular the youngster shows great sensitivity in capturing the expressions in the monkey’s faces. There is a certain lack of fussiness in the details and a strength in the brushwork of the overall painting which leads to believe that this is perhaps a genuine work directly from the hand of the artist Sosen himself.
