RARE COLLECTOR QUALITY ANTIQUE TIMURI (Baluch-in-name-only) PRAYER RUG, most probably from Northeast Persia's Khorasan Province in an area called Khas located south of Mashad, 19th century (before 1885), and coming in fairly good overall condition for the collector specialist. The exact size is: 2'-11" x 4'-1" (89 x 124 cm). Provenance: The Robert Pittenger Collection, NYC, NY. Older Timuri prayer rugs are more square in shape than their later counterparts and they show a minimal use of white and yellow or, like in the earliest known specimens, no use of these colors at all. This particular specimen is asymmetrically knotted open to the left on natural ivory wool warps and natural brown wool wefts. This antique prayer rug shows allover low pile condition with some lower pile areas and foundation peeking through. Both the top and bottom endings are original and complete with remnants of elaborate weft-float brocadings present for the end finishes. The side cord over-castings are all complete and show the original red and blue barber-pole selvedges. The dyes are 100% natural and derived from plant sources with the dark red and the medium blue being saturated and brilliant. Natural ivory wool was used sparingly to create an x-box device on one of the innermost guard border surrounds. The brown dye color is oxidized. Timuri prayer rugs are uncommon and this one is an older example of its type that comes in a fairly good state of preservation for its age. It is suggested by Jerry Anderson in HALI 76, page 83, that Timuri sub-tribes are identified by the main border patterns. Only a handful of known specimens have the tree-of-life shrub forms that this one exhibits. For other published pieces showing this field pattern on a dark indigo blue ground color, refer to: (1) Gary Wisdom, "Baluch Tribal Weavings", plate 50, page 122, (2) David Black, "Rugs of the Wandering Baluch", plate 11, (3) HALI 102, Robert Pittenger, plate 3, page 80, and lastly (4) Michael Craycraft, "Belouch Prayer Rugs", plate 9, page 26.
