22" High x 8 1/2" Wide x 10" Deep Weight is 14lbs 8oz The Country Tin is pleased to feature an extremely rare example of a mid to late 19th century trade sign recently purchased out of a collection of folk art assembled over forty years ago. A truly priceless and historical piece of american history and folk art. This period figural trade sign echo's back to a time of segregation during the "Jim Crow" era, A form such as this served the function of advertising the practice of a town Doctor/Pharmacist/Drugstore that would have offered their services to an African American clientele during a ti me period where facilities and services were commonly separated by race. As you can see the form of the head is formed with slightly exaggerated features a theme that embodied itself across numerous avenues of period advertising culture. The form itself is a masterful example of folk art carving. As you can see the original carver worked in the wonderful feature that the figure has a formed pill on their tongue, reinforcing the fact that the services advertised were medical in nature. Having seen a similar figural trade sign we can remember reading a theory that a form such as this would have also served to substitute the text on a sign being that potential patrons may not have been literate.
