You are bidding on a marked early 19th century American Pewter teapot with the mark of "J. Danforth". Josiah Danforth, Middletown, CT. 1821 - 1837. The last in the long line of famous 18th and 19th century American Pewterers of the Danforth name.
Josiah's cousin, Thomas D. Boardman, for whom he apprenticed, developed the first formula for britannia metal in America in the early years of the 19th century and managed to keep it his secret for nearly 20 years. (Thomas didn't invent it, since it had been known and used in England for nearly a century, but had been a great secret from the Americans) Josiah may have the dubious distinction of being the one that leaked his cousin Thomas's secret formula of the first britannia metal in America to another journeyman pewterer who in turn leaked it. And the rest, they say, is history. "loose lips sink ships"! 7 1/4" high. Bottom dia 4 3/8". In very good, as found, condition. The metal is clean and bright with no damage, pitting, breaks or repairs. It retains the original wooden wafer on the finial, although it's been split and re-glued and the finial has a little lean. Amazingly, the inside is literally like new. This pot has about a 6 cup capacity. If one likes a goal of attempting to acquire pairs or sets of similar items, Josiah made a diminutive 4 cup teapot that is nearly identical in form to this one. The same shaped body, the same shaped handle. If one was lucky enough to acquire them both, they would make an attractive stepped set. Bid with confidence. Item guaranteed. I want you to be pleased with your purchase. Successful buyer pays actual postage (Priority Mail) and insurance. On this item I can accept Paypal, checks, money orders, and cashier's checks. Paypal, money orders and cashier's checks will ship immediately on receipt. Checks will be held until cleared. United States Bids only please. Thanks for looking. Please note: As more and more eBay sellers are needing to express - I expect email contact and payment received promptly per eBay's guidelines. I do not participate in eBay's or Paypal's checkout system and impersonal automated invoices without first personally contacting the buyer via email. I prefer providing you with personal and prompt contact and service, the old fashioned way. I will contact the buyer directly via email at the end of the auction. If you have restrictive email filtering, please watch for an email. Please don't hesitate to email for more information.
