Beautiful Antique Enamel and Diamond 14K Gold PortraitBrooch
Wow--look at that enamel portrait. Isn't it amazing? Painting with enamel powders (which are actually finely crushed glass) is a highly skilled art form which can take years to master. Each piece is kiln-fired up to 30 times, and one false move in controlling the techniques can lead to ruin. Only the very best enamels capture facial detail so beautifully. The enamel repousse work surrounding the portrait is equally stunning. Now lets talk about that frame, a wonderful halo of scrolls and flourishes, it works so cohesively with the portrait I'd imagine it must have been made especially for it. 19th Century, most likely French, the enamel portrait piece was once the front of a pocket watch and has been expertly modified into a brooch. The portrait piece has been attached to the frame with silver solder, very small amounts in 6 spots, expertly done and very subtle, only seen on close exam. I'd imagine the jeweler chose this type of solder because of its low heating temp, so as not to damage the portrait. I suppose it could be gilt over by a jeweler easily enough if you so desire. The brooch weighs approximately 11.9 grams. Its overall size is 2 1/2" tall x 2" wide. The central enamel portrait piece is about 1 1/2" in diameter. The outer framework tests positive 10K but is not marked, the round gold piece featuring the enamel portrait tests positive 14K, but not is marked as such, however, it does have a maker's mark? along with the numbers "327." The lovely woman's floral crown is adorned with 3 rose-cut diamonds. Has locking pin clasp and also has hidden loop w you could attach a bale for wearing as a pendant if desired . Condition of this unusual and beautiful piece is excellent. No enamel loss and the pin assembly is in working order. T is a tiny split in one of the gold scrolls, only noticed on close inspection, and reflected in my reasonable price. We've all seen these gorgeous miniature enamels on pocket watches sell for thousands of dollars; 's your chance to own a stellar miniature for a fraction of that price.Ships Worldwide Bid with confidence, I have 100% positive feedback from buyers.
