From the late Qing Dynasty, a nice compartmented rectangular tray for a vanity table or writing desk. The original cover for the top center section is missing, but the tray otherwise is in very good condition. Stylistically, the piece appears to have been made around the third or fourth quarters of the 19th century. Its nicely painted famille rose figural motif likely was inspired by an ancient Chinese legend, if not the myth of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, then perhaps the tale of Mulan the Warrior Maiden. The four sides are accented in rouge de fer with bamboo leaf designs, painted in a calligraphic style that sometimes includes cipd auspicious blessings. Though not officially part of this auction, the substitute cover shown in the last of the accompanying images will be included in the shipment if the winning bidder wishes to have it. SIZE : Approximately 9 7/8 x 6 3/8 x 1/2 inches (25.2 x 16.3 x 1.28 centimeters) CONDITION: The porcelain body has no visible chips, cracks or restoration. Glazed surfaces exhibit the expected orange peel for the estimated period, as well as typical tiny pinpricks, a few pinhead-size bubble bursts and a sprinkling of carbonized spots from the kiln. The figural decoration is in surprisingly good condition for estimated age, with facial features and gold hair ornamentation still sharply defined. read more
