Presenting a wonderful example of French country furniture from the mid 19th century! The charm and simple sturdiness of the piece speaks of its place in a French, farmhouse of a 150 years ago.
First, the color - a soft, blue/grey outside and white inside. There has been some retouching over the years, of course, but the blue/grey seems original. The metal, French-style hinges are original, as is the elaborate escutcheon. I have the original key for the lock. Inside, there is a hand-wrought, iron hook and eye which closes the left door snugly. The inside of the doors is interesting, in that it matches the design of the outside door trim on the other side. One of the great charms of this armoire is that the proportions of the piece seem unusual. The reason may be that farmhouses in 19th c. France often had low ceilings. The benefit for us today is that the armoire can be used in many different ways. Imagine it with the doors thrown open in a bathroom, with towels and such on display. Or in an entry hall, or country dining room or kitchen. The possibilities are many, but however it is used, it will be a major design element in any beautiful home. The original key goes along with the armoire. Please note the newly lowered price. If you live anywhere within driving range of the North West Corner of CT, come and pick it up and save the shipping! Please check with your local mover about delivery. You may be able to get a good deal. This is a great piece...don't lose out because of the shipping!!
