An early pipe or spoon rack with very intricate cut-outs and carvings. This piece dates to the 1870-1890 time frame and is probably Pennsylvania or New York in origin. It is in excellent condition, with the exception of the missing drawer. I had this piece in storage for a while and happened to misplace the drawer. The entire piece is constructed with hand wrought square and small round head nails, and the back joints are dovetailed. The middle would have held larger pipes and the drawer would hold tobacco. T are ten holes on either side, that vary in size, for different size pipes. This has an early finish and a very nice patina. The carvings are very well done on the sides and the middle, and will display very well. It measures 33" long, 18 1/4" tall, the sides are 4" deep and the middle is 5" deep. A rare piece of early Americana, offered with a low reserve. Please see my other auctions for more great early primitives and folk art (pictured).
Payment expected within 7 days of auction's end, item will be shipped UPS ground. Insurance is included in the price listed for shipping. International bidders, please contact me for a shipping quote. I was given information by a very knowledgable ebayer that this piece is actually a kitchen wall mortar, pestle and spoon holder or rack. The small brass or bronze mortar rests in the U shaped cut-out at the front of the piece, and its matching pestle rests in the cradle just above. The small drawer that is absent, would have held hard salt or freshly ground spice for cooking.
