An extremely rare, full plate tintype of a 19th century Japanese military officer. Photo measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" with an 8" x 10" cardboard matt in a beautiful hardwood shadowbox frame. The photo itself is slightly dark, particularly along the left edge, t is minor scratching across the surface, overall fair condition. The subject is a young Japanese Imperial soldier and the photo has been touched up with color. The officer wears a light blue jacket with gold collar and cuffs, dark trousers and high boots. He wears a dark cap with brim on his head and holds a sword or saber in his left hand. This image is not only rare due to its subject matter, but also because of the size of the tintype. Overall a great antique image! High bidder includes $8 shipping/insurance, NY residents include 8% sales tax.** Note ** A friendly eBayer suggests that the uniform is Austro-Hungarian cavalry. I was told by the individual from whom I purchased this that the subject was Japanese and the soldier certainly looks oriental, however the background does look Victorian. Informed opinions are welcome.
