19 TH CENTURY VICTORIAN MARY GREGORY DECANTER (NOT A REPRODUCTION, LIKE MANY OFFERED ON EBAY) GUARANTEED TO BE AN AUTHENTIC/GENUINE (not American, but of European or English origin, because of the tinted faces on the figures) We offer today a Colossal, tall, and beautiful Mary Gregory Aquamarine Glass Decanter (with the proper ribbing in the glass - very apparent in victorian era glass works). This hourglass beauty has a silhouette of a standing gnome drinking wine with a seated gnome speaking to his friend . I Mary Gregory is the name used for a type of glass that is easily identified. White figures were painted on clear or colored glass as the decoration in the United States. The figures chosen were usually children at play. The first glass known as Mary Gregory was made about 1870. In general, all-white figures were used in the United States, tinted faces were probably used in Bohemia, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and England. So it appears that this decanter is European or English in origin. The vase measures 15.5" inches in height, 15" diameter of widest part of the decanter; and is in fantastic condition, with no chips or cracks to the glass decanter. The stopper has three tiny indentations at the very end of the stopper, which appear to be due to the crude hand-cutting of the stopper to make it fit in the decanter properly. It could also be old fleabites (see pics), but I believe it was done in the manufacture. The stopper, is marked with an inscribed "12" (via diamond tip); the oil paintings on the decanter are flawless and not worn; but the gilt on the stopper, rim and base of the decanter is expectantly worn due to the age of the vessel. The decanter comes from a local estate and the previous owner said this vase had been in her family for at least 90 years. It is quite a beauty. Good luck on your endeavors to own this historical heirloom. DIVERSITY IS OUR MOTTO ....
