Primitive and original 19th century cast brass cowbell with original wrought iron clapper. This cow bell has rocker engraved initials and the date 1860 , set between two lightly scribed parallel lines. The initials are an upside down V and the letter S . The upside down V has a lightly scribed line across this, so possibly this is the letter A . These initials likely identify the farmer on whose cow this bell was placed. This bell is 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) high and 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) by 2 1/4 inches (5.6 cm) across the bottom opening. This old bell has a great patina and shows wear in all the places one would expect on a 150+ year old cow bell: The round opening on the top has worn to an elongated oval from swinging on a chain. The inside bottom edge is beveled from the clanging of the clapper, with corresponding wear on the clapper where it hits this edge. This is a great old cowbell from 1860 - authentic and original.
