This is a one-of-a-kind figural chair from the late 19 th Century. Depictions of griffins,mythological horses, lions’ paws, a religious figure in the form of a cherub, and elaborate flowers adorn this chair. The style is Rococo, which was an artistic movement during the 18th century, stemming from the Baroque period. There are casters on this chair, making it easier to move around if necessary. The chair is an open back (seat rail and back are not joined); the upholstery is leather on the back and brown cloth on the seat. The arms slope to hand rests that are large and scroll under. There are griffins at the ends of the hand rests; there are horses' heads with a bridle under the hand rests. To horses rest beneath the hand rests, having mythological qualities; the front legs of the horses appear to be hooves, but the back legs have the appearance of a dragon’s tail; and the horses have wings like Pegasus. Note: one of the front hooves is dislodged and needs repair. The crest of the chair, above the upholstery, is pierced (open) with many ornate decorative carvings with scrolls and leaves; this motif surrounds the upholstery. The apron is curved with a similar motif.
