Joseph M. Kavanagh (Irish, 1856-1919)is the artist who painted this oil on canvas genre painting, which he signed lower right. Kavanagh studied at the Metropolitan School of Art 1887-1888 and traveled to Antwerp to study with Verlat, sharing lodgings with fellow Irish artist Walter Osborne. They returned in 1882-83 for more study. Kavanagh painted numerous views of the countryside and produced and exhibited many etchings over the next four years. Upon his return to Ireland, he settled in Clontarf and focused on capturing the local views of Dublin and its outlying regions, producing studies of Dublin Bay, Sutton, Portmarnock & North Bull. Kavanagh was a prolific painter, but his work is relatively rare, as his studio and many of his paintings were destroyed by fire. The only surviving works are those which had already left his possession before the fire. He was lucky to escape the building with his life and never fully recovered from the tragedy. This painting measures 23 x 27 inches framed. Canvas size is 20 x 24 inches. This painting is in excellent condition and blacklights perfectly.
