(Provenance regarding this item, as provided by the Family of the late owner, indicates that this box was obtained sometime during the latter portion of the 19th century in San Francisco, California, and given to the Late Owners Grandfather by a Friend. It was assumed to be of Chinese origin having come from China Town.) However, the design style indicates it is more likely Japanese made, possibly Yokohama, embellished with a bezel mounted Chinese White Jade Nephrite stone, & commonly referred to as a Snuff Box. It is unmarked and possibly was not originally made for export. T are however, similar examples of Georgian Era pieces that were exported to England that also have no marking at all, and are often mistaken for "unmarked English" silver pieces. The design is simple, yet expertly crafted, with some interesting features regarding it's construction... The top and sides are hand tooled silver. The exterior has a very fine polish, however, if you look closely at the finish on the interior, tooling marks can be seen w the craftsman hand planed the material to it's present gage of thickness. The sides, cut into strips, are bent to form 90 degree angles, and the ends joined. The top was then joined to the angled strip forming the lid. The bottom of the box and bezel mount holding the stone were made using brass sheet material . The bezel was made into an ogee design and meticulously made to conform to every contour of the stone. The bezel was attached to the top while the other plated piece makes up the bottom portion of the box. A hinge joint joins top & bottom. A thin strip of silver on the inside bottom portion forms an inner lip & shelf for a tight & perfect fit. What is interesting about this box is after completion, the entire piece was then given a heavy plating of Sterling Silver and polished to a brilliant shine. Tfor you have silver plated Brass AND Silver Plated Silver resulting in a very fine smooth finish. In summary, and to avoid confusion, This is a Solid Silver Box with a silver plated brass bottom and silver plated stone bezel mount. ><<<<>>>>< Bid with confidence...
