Nineteenth-century Photograph Album
THE THORVALDSEN MUSEUM, COPENHAGEN This is a massive 18 x 14 inch folio-sized album containing forty photographs of figures by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in the Museum named after him in Copenhagen. The Museum was opened in 1848 as a showcase for the plaster casts of most of Thorvaldsenâe(tm)s work. T is no date in the album but the look of the photographs together with such information as exists about the studio responsible for most of them âe" Budtz Muller of Bredgade, Copenhagenâe" would date them at around the 1860s or 70s. A minority of the photographs were made by the studio of Joh Jaeger. The photographs are typically around 6 x 10 inches and are pasted one to a page with a dual Danish / French caption underneath. The photographs are: Vernetâe(tm)s portrait of Thorvaldsen; exterior shot of the Museum; two shots of the vestibule; Jason with the Golden Fleece; Vulcan; Venus; Mercury; Ganymede; dancing girl; shepherd boy; Hope; Cupid and Psyche; two boy archers; two wrestlers; Briseis and Achilles; Hylas and the nymphs; singing putti; shepherdess and putti; self-portrait with Hope; John the Baptist; Christ at Emmaus; exterior shot of the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen; two shots of the altar with the statue of Christ in the Church; baptismal font; Christ; Saint Peter; James; John; Andrew; Bartholomew; Thomas; the older James; Jude; Simon; Philip; Matthew; Paul; and the tomb of Thorvaldsen in the Museum courtyard. The album is bound in dark red leather with gilt lettering and all the page edges are gilt. The endpapers are silk. While moderately scuffed, the album is nevertheless clean and soundly bound and the photographs are intact. It weighs almost 6kg. A monumental and apparently unique early photographic record of the Danish neoclassicistâe(tm)s work
